INSPIRING AUTUMN!

The months of April, May and June are technically known as ‘autumn’ in South Africa; characterised by cooler mornings and evenings, with lovely temperate days.

Autumn is a good time to assess your home décor. Take note of the colour and décor trends, adding or subtracting key pieces to update your style for the year ahead. Cooler days mean more energy, which translates into creativity and enterprise.

Linen Drawer is not lagging when it comes to this. This is a great time of year to introduce new products and designs, so without too much preamble we introduce our new embroidery designs!

Taking the latest trends into account, these designs reflect the glory of natural, organic shapes in unique configurations. They complement the existing Linen Drawer embroidery designs, and offer a vibrant new note to the portfolio. Here are the new designs:

Bird Damask- a playful take on the classical Damask designs. There are two parts to this design; a full damask design and a simplified single design. They can be used individually or as a set, for instance on duvets and pillowcases.

Chrysanthemum – symbolic of long life and wealth this design portrays this glorious flower from bud to fully opened. There are two parts to this design, a full design and a simplified design, which can be used singly or as a matching set.

Fleur de Lis – this design is ancient and is a stylised depiction of the Christian Holy Trinity. It has been adopted by royalty for centuries and is associated with formal, stylised designs. The two designs in this group are a full design suitable for larger areas and a smaller accent design that can be used on its own or with the full design.

Floral Spray – this design is based on the Hindu or Buddhist ‘mandala’, which is a symbol used to represent creation, the whole world. The design is floral, with swirling organic shapes, echoing nature’s creations. Again, it comprises two parts which can be used together or singly, depending on preference.

Grape Wreath – inspired by the plentiful bounty of the grape harvest, this design gives thanks to the kindness of nature. The full design is a beautiful wreath design, and is complemented by a simpler design of grapes and wheat – both symbols of plenty and abundance.

Mexican Damask – this Aztec inspired design is an ethnic take on the classical damask designs. Bold and graphic, it is unapologetically modern and is also our biggest design. A versatile design which can be used as a pair or singly – it lends a vibrant touch.

Olive Branch – olives and olive trees are symbolic of friendship and peace. Our design has a lovely loose sweep and can be used as the full design or as a single accent.

Linen Drawer is very proud of their new designs and is looking forward to personalising your bed, bath and table linen with the above designs. Visit us at https://www.linendrawer.co.za/embroidery-options see other classic embroidery designs from Linen Drawer.

LIVING CORAL

Living Coral has been chosen as the Pantone colour of the year, sparking controversy because there is so little coral left that is alive! However, as we are optimists at Linen Drawer, we believe that the colour, and any discussion of the shade can only draw attention to the plight of our coral reefs.

Should you be unfamiliar with the colour, it is a rich orangey toned pink with underlying gold tones. It is a warm, happy colour which encourages us to think of glorious sunsets, flamingos and the surprising insides of seashells.

At Linen Drawer we have embraced the colour as it sits so well alongside our colour range of 400 thread count Egyptian cotton bed linen, in sand, blue vapour and slate. It looks fresh and young next to white, and duck egg, while it brings an unexpected twist when paired with cream or taupebed linen.

Few interior design gurus would recommend an entire bed ‘dressed’ in Living Coral, but if used as an accent in a throw, embroidery, or satin-stitching, it certainly is on trend. Of course, if you deepen the hue, you achieve a subtle, mature colour – looking at shades of terracotta, sienna and brick.

Whichever way you choose to use Living Coral, it remains a wonderfully uplifting and optimistic colour. Alongside muted neutrals like sage, taupe and pale grey it provides a lively pop! At Linen Drawer we will use it as an embroidery and satinstitching colour, to enliven our classic palette of coloured bed linen.

SLEEPING COMFORT

Ta-daa!!

Introducing Linen Drawer’s newest product – PURE COTTON DUVET INNERS!

I have been privileged to own one of these duvet inners for a while now and I can honestly say that my sleeping life has changed! Having a ‘hot’ sleeping partner is great, but not a joke when they are always too warm and you are always too cold.

I am fortunate to own pure cotton bedding, and can testify to the joys of a 100%pure cotton duvet inner!

Firstly, one notices the weight –very lightweight, a huge advantage if you dislike being trapped under heavy bedding. Secondly, something I can only call the ‘cool snuggliness’- being exactly the right temperature in your bed. Knowing that whatever the variances in temperature in your bedroom, throughout the night, you will be comfortable.

Washing this duvet inner is a breeze. It can be machine washed and either line dried or tumble dried. The pure cotton casing, block quilting, and cotton bound edges all ensure that it is a durable product of the highest quality.

Cotton does not absorb odours, so that cotton bedding, and in particular a 100% cotton duvet inner, keeps your bedroom fresher for longer.

Cotton is naturally hypoallergenic, and is therefore the best choice for sensitive skin and allergies. Sleep quality is enhanced due to the breathability of cotton – it absorbs moisture (perspiration) during sleep, without leaving you feeling clammy and sweaty, and hereby helps to regulate your ‘sleeping body’ temperature.

Linen Drawer stands for sleeping comfort – the concept underpins everything we do, and these 100% pure cotton duvet inners sit comfortably alongside our other pure cotton and linen products.

Make you bed the best it can be with pure cotton bed linen and a 100% pure cotton duvet inner from Linen Drawer. You will feel the difference after one night’s sleep, and be ready to seize the day and the new year!

A PROPITIOUS YEAR

Traditionally the last blog of the year is one of thanks. This one is absolutely no different, except that we, at Linen Drawer, have additional thanks to extend to our clients, agents, suppliers and employees.

This year has been one of extreme change. Starting with a full order-book in January, we were off to the New Year with a bang! In February we planned the move; the opportunity to move the business to larger premises had to be realised and as one can imagine, that also presented a new set of challenges.

The big move happened in March, fairly trauma-free and we were soon operating happily from bigger, better premises. Exciting new opportunities from Lesotho, Bloemfontein, and Johannesburg all became apparent, after visits and presentations with clients and agents.

Linen Drawer has done more entertaining this year than ever before. We hosted Open Days in August and September, a Hospitality Launch, and had a definite presence at the Boat Show in Cape Town in October. This exposure has resulted in new opportunities and clients, establishing the Linen Drawer brand as one synonymous with comfort, quality and great service.

Due to the expanded manufacturing space, we were able to accept larger orders. This also led us to expand our team of manufacturing employees and we welcome all our new staff members who joined the factory in our new premises.

For all the above, all these heaped blessings – we say “THANK YOU!”

Thanks to our clients – old and new. Thanks to our agents – you go the extra, again and again. Thanks to our suppliers – your service and products enable us to grow and expand our business. Thanks to everyone who works at Linen Drawer- your patience, dedication, hard work and humour cannot be replicated.

Have a blessed Festive Season, and may next year take us all to new heights!

GIVING MEANING

Christmas! Do you feel an upwelling of joy and anticipation when you hear the word, or dread and anxiety about overspending?

Every year I used to suffer from Shoppingitus Xmasia a deadly creepy, unshakeable condition, which manifests as the fanatical search for the perfect gift for everyone on your gift list. Relief came from my wise and long-suffering husband, who pointed out that perfection was best not pursued in this area, adding that the most precious gift of all, was time.

This forced a change of attitude on me. Spending time with friends, colleagues, and family is the best way to say – ‘I love you, you matter to me’.

If you feel obliged to give a material gift, ask what the recipient would like. Listening to what people say will lead you to find out what they want, and often it’s not the gift, but the feeling that the gift evokes that they remark on.

The recipients of your gifts need to feel special - and Maya Angelou’s famous quote, below, says it all!

Linen Drawer has embraced this concept, in all aspects of the business. Their products, made from the best quality fabrics, made with attention to detail and love, ensure that anyone receiving a gift bought online or in the Linen Drawer showroom will feel special and loved.

‘Sleeping Comfort’ is the promise that Linen Drawer products hold – what is more precious than this, for all your loved ones?

Browse amongst beautiful 400thread count Egyptian Cotton gowns, soft, cuddly Pure CottonThrows, beautiful Table Linen, fluffy Towels, luxurious Bed Linen – all which can easily be monogrammed or embroidered to make the gift really special and personal. We can also provide a gift voucher(only availableat our showrooms in Paarl and only relevant to purchases made there) – enabling the recipient to choose their own gift. Visit our showroom or go online (https://www.linendrawer.co.za/) to choose meaningful gifts for those you love and care about.

A TIME TO DINE, A TIME TO RELAX

The September equinox, dated this year on 22 September, marked the beginning of spring in the Southern Hemisphere. In a nutshell, we are officially experiencing Spring in the southern hemisphere!

From this day onwards, the days grow longer and the nights shorter. This means that we can venture outside to enjoy long twilight dinners, rise earlier for sparkling spring breakfasts, and enjoy full sunny luncheons, all hopefully al fresco.

At Linen Drawer we have exactly what you need for all those indulgent, lazy lunches, breakfasts and dinners. Our range of table linen will ensure that you never run out of table décor ideas, and that every occasion will be stylishly catered for.

Our newest addition to an illustrious range is the Natural Pure Linen tabling. Generously sized table cloths and table napkins, with deep hemstitched hems, can transition from breakfast to dinner easily. Natural Pure Linen is the best fabric to use for table linen, as it’s texture and colour enhance any setting, as well as being extremely durable and luxurious.

If your passion is for pure white table linen, Linen Drawer can offer you a few choices:

Purest White is a range of 100% Rami table linen in white with hemstitching. The slubbed weave is extremely attractive and can be used in a casual setting as well as the most formal dinner table setting.

Luxury Satin is a range of table linen with deep hems on the table cloths and table napkins, enhanced by two rows of satin-stitching on the table cloth and a single row on the table napkins. The pearly sheen of the sateen weave fabric, belies its strength and practicality.

Classical Damask table linen has the timeless appeal of white damask. The damask weave design is modern, which lends this table linen a contemporary edge. Versatile and timeless, damask is a staple in the linen cupboard.

Antique Stone and Natural Stone are two ranges offered in plain weave stone conlyn. They both feature 5cm hems on the table cloths and 2.5cm hems on the table napkins. Antique Stone is enhanced by hemstitching on the hems, whereas Natural Stone has two rows of chocolate top stitching on the hems. Extremely hard wearing and versatile, the stone conlyn can be ‘dressed up’ or ‘down’ depending on your requirements and preferences.

With choices such as these, it is imperative that you start enjoying the wonderful spring days and the approaching summer. Opening your home to friends and family, sharing food and wine, stories and lives, is such a great way to relax and recharge those batteries that have been working so hard throughout the long winter!

STOP AND SMELL THE FLOWERS

Spring starts in August. Call me an idiot, but from the start of August I notice a slight softening of the cold air, later sun-sets, birds returning, flowering bulbs like daffodils, freesias and hyacinths sprouting and starting to flower. The jasmine that festoons walls and fences also begin to show small buds, promising the wonderful scents that properlyherald spring. August is the month of hope, of anticipation, before the surge of September and spring proper bursts into our senses.

No human prompting is required for the seasons to turn, and therein lies the absolute wonder of spring. The certain and sure herald of new growth, new life and the promise of the warmth of a summer to come.

Slow and sure… the days lengthen, buds turn into flowers and leaves, green tips are everywhere and the air is scented and soft. Birds and insects are suddenly active and early mornings are filled with new birdsong, as well as the bubbling chirps of returning swallows.

At Linen Drawer we are busy – as the proverbial bees – with new products and designs to herald the spring excitement. Watch our website https://www.linendrawer.co.za/ and newsletter for forthcoming launches and products…because as sure as summer follows autumn, we have been very busy. We are inspired and ready to meet the new season with products that will complement and enhance our beautiful established ranges of bed and table linen.

Stop and smell the flowers – we do…and can recommend it!

PILLOWTALK

Today we are asking where you lay your head? Your pillow is your most important companion to sleep. We at Linen Drawer are specialists when it comes to sleeping comfort, as our whole business is built around this ethos.

Does your pillow bear examining, or is it smelly, stained and generally not fit to be under your head? If you suspect that you may need a new pillow, you probably do!

How to choose? Where to start? I have researched the matter, and the following guidelines apply:

Ask yourself three questions –

  • What is my favourite sleeping position?
  • Do I like soft or firm pillows?
  • Am I allergic to feathers?

Your preference for soft or firm pillows is based on habit and experience. Your decision naturally, but consider the information below before you decide.

If you sleep on your back, you will generally need a medium firm pillow that provides just enough support so that your head is aligned with your spine. If you sleep on you stomach, you need a flat pillow that gives little support and doesn’t angle your head. Side sleepers need a pillow that bridges the gap between your head and shoulder, usually a firm to medium pillow.

Allergies to down and feathers are often not caused by the filling, but by the dust mites that are attracted to feathers and down that are not scrupulously clean. It is advised to wash pillows and duvet inners regularly (watch our next blog for laundering tips). Choose feather and down pillows from reputable suppliers – like Linen Drawer- who ensure that their products are clean and discourage allergies -https://www.linendrawer.co.za/duvets-and-pillows

If the mere sight of a feather causes you to sneeze – then you may want to consider another filling such a microfibre, wool, cotton, silk, buckwheat or latex.

Linen Drawer stocks luxurious microfibre and spiral puff pillows, in a medium firmness, in cotton casings, to ensure sleeping comfort and ease of laundering.https://www.linendrawer.co.za/duvets-and-pillows/microfibre-spiral-puff-range

In addition to microfibre pillows, Linen Drawer also stocks down and feather pillows in two configurations:

  • Three-chamber down/feather – this pillow is new to the Linen Drawer stable and has a unique construction, having an ‘inner’ of feathers and an ‘outer’ layer of down. This ensures that you benefit from the firmer support of the feathers, while enjoying the supreme sleeping comfort of down.

All Linen Drawer pillows are cased in 100% pure down-proof cotton, ensuring cool, comfortable sleeping. They are scrupulously checked for fill quality and consistency and should give you years of service.

All down and feather products from Linen Drawer carry certification from the International Downand Feather Bureau, which certifies that the products have been ethically sourced. (http://www.grannygoose.com/ethics )

Sleeping comfort is only ensured if you choose pillow-cases in natural fibres that allow your head to ‘breathe’ and remain cool throughout the night. At Linen Drawer we can assist you in all aspects of choosing pillows and pillowcases…. that will ensure your sleep is restful and beneficial.

Let the friendly, trained staff at Linen Drawer assist you with all your pillow-queries. Contact us at info@linendrawer.co.za

LAUNDERING BLANKETS – DIFFICULT?

Soft, fluffy clean blankets. We all want them, but are sometimesare at a loss as to how best to launder them.

I have made it easy for you – here are somegeneral guidelinesto laundering all blankets – from cotton to mohair, and everything in between. Let’s start with a few basic points.

Know what your blanket is made from. Look at the care label and determine whether it is cotton, a blend of cotton and acrylic, nylon, polyester, rayon, wool, mohair or anything else. This will determine the washing method you should use.

Secondly, give the blanket a good shake. This is to get rid of dust and any loose dirt on the blanket. You are almost ready to start washing!

COTTON BLANKETS:

Generally, most cotton blankets can be machine washed. Use the same steps as those for the acrylic blanket below but remember the following:

  • Use warm, not hot, water – about 40ºC is sufficient to remove dirt. Hot water will shrink the cotton fibres and could cause the colours to run.
  • Use mild liquid detergent and make sure that it is dissolved in the water before adding the blanket
  • Set the machine on gentle and wash.. for a minimum time.
  • Rinse in cool water, short spin and then dry flat.
  • Cotton blankets can be tumble dried on a cool cycle, for a short time. Extremes of time and temperature could result in shrinkage.

The 100% cotton blankets stocked at Linen Drawer: (https://www.linendrawer.co.za/throws-blankets/horizon-pure-cotton-throws ) can be machine washed and tumble dried – no fuss at all!

ACRYLIC, NYLON, POLYESTER BLANKETS:https://www.linendrawer.co.za/throws-blankets/acrylic-furpile

  • These blankets are generally suited to machine washing. They do however tend to be quite bulky, so check whether your machine capacity is adequate for your blanket. There should be adequate space after your blanket is loaded in the washing machine for it to be able to move around.
  • Set the machine on ‘gentle’ and cool wash. Add liquid detergent.
  • A short cycle is recommended for more delicate blankets, whereas heavier blankets can go through the full cycle.
  • Shake the blanket well after spinning in order to return the pile to its original state.
  • Hang/air dry the blanket or tumble dry on a cool setting.

MOHAIR AND WOOLEN BLANKETS: https://www.linendrawer.co.za/throws-blankets/hinterveld-mohair-throws-blankets

  • After a good shake, to dislodge loose dirt and dust, these blankets can be hand washed.
  • Fill a large tub withwarmish water – about 36ºC.
  • Add a detergent, like Woolite, that is suitable for delicate woollen fabrics. Ensure detergent is full dissolved.
  • Place blanket in tub, gently squeezing down to wet. Never agitate vigorously, this will cause your blanket to ‘felt’.
  • Squeeze and press the blanket bit by bit untill all the dirt is removed. Never rub, swirl or wring a woollen or mohair blanket.
  • Lift away the wet blanket gently, drain away dirty water and refill tub with clean water -35ºC.
  • Gently squeeze and press all the detergent out of the blanket, section by section.
  • Have a clean sheet or very large towel ready. Lift the blanket gently squeezing out the water and place on the clean sheet or large towel. Roll the sheet or towel with the blanket inside. This helps to rid the blanket of excess water without resorting to wringing.
  • Remove from the sheet or towel and gently lay on a flat surface in an airy place to air dry.
  • Ensure that you don’t stretch or pull the blanket, remember hair-like fibres are at their most delicate when wet, and can be easily distorted and spoiled.
  • It helps to dry the blanket on towels to absorb moisture if you don’t have a large flat slatted surface on which to dry it.

NEVER tumble dry a wool or mohair blanket.

By adopting a practical approach to laundering blankets, you will ensure that you and the whole family have soft, fluffy, clean blankets all year round.

If you need any help, or have any laundering queries, please don’t hesitate to contact Linen Drawer.https://www.linendrawer.co.za/ We have expertise and knowledge to share with you!

HEAR ME ROAR

“I am woman, hear me roar” is the first line of the song written by Helen Reddy in the 1970’s which became the anthem of the feminist movement. To me it speaks only of empowerment, and the lyrics are applicable whether you are male or female.

August is the month in which we celebrate Women’s Day in South Africa. The purpose is to acknowledge the importance of women in our lives and applaud their successes and achievements. Let’s examine what the ideal 21st century woman looks like.

The modern woman has come a long way. She is no longer house-bound, subservient to a husband or father, and bound by ignorance and society. Today, women are free to study, work, vote, and choose whatever life they want. The modern woman is in a position to adapt and benefit from the challenges and change that is inherent in living in the 21st century.

The ability to vote, and participate in political decision-making, is the most empowering breakthrough for women in our modern age. Women’s voices count equally to men’s. They can affect governance and policy making to provide caring and supportive societies in which all people can flourish.

Women’s career choices are now the same as men’s. They enjoy the freedom of competing for the same positions and sharing the same career achievements. Women are seen as equal to men.

The modern woman is independent. She has a firm sense of what she wants and how to achieve her goals. This means that she is also confident that she can adapt and change as life challenges her.

However, the 21st century woman is not boring. Her sense of humour has helped her cope with challenges, as well as tempering her strength. She is kind, because she knows that kindness is the ultimate test of character. She is beautiful because of her confidence and comfort in her own skin – not defined by society or fashion. Her intelligence lights her life path and that of everyone she meets. She has a well-defined sense of adventure, because adventures, big or small, are what define a passionately lived life.

Women have never been more empowered to truly be the best they can be. There are no limits to what is achievable. The future lies in the hands of women; those working, studying, mothering, caring, nurturing, fighting, laughing and roaring women we see around us every day.

Let’s honour them this month of August and specially on Women’s Day, 9 August.

At Linen Drawer we celebrate women every day, but in August we celebrate all month!

DUCK DOWN THIS WINTER!

Winter isn’t coming – it’s here already, and with it the downright chilly weather that you either love or hate.

Personally, I don’t like winter, and if you are similar to me, and suffer from ‘coldness,’ then I have just the product to keep you warm and comfortable all winter. Our grannies knew what they were doing when they layered on the eiderdowns (very plushy feather quilts) on our beds in winter. Those eiderdowns were wonderfully warm and kept out the worst winter chills, but were bulkyand cumbersome to use.

Bearing the above in mind, I searched for down products that were ethically sourced and certified. Happily, I found that Linen Drawer stocksduck and goose down duvet inners that comply to international testing and ethical standards. Why such concern with ethics? Linen Drawer prides itself for adhering to ethical standards when it comes to sourcing of products, employment and environmental issues.

Down duvet and pillows are made form the soft featherlike down on the breasts of geese and ducks. Goose down is superior to duck down only in that the down clusters are larger and trap more air. It is this supremely wonderful insulation that makes down the warmest natural insulator know to man. Down has the ability to absorb moisture and to pass it off into the atmosphere. Ensuring that you are cosy and not clammy. This breathability allows you to use down products all year long – down is warm in winter and cool in summer.

Most down products are filled with a mixture of down and feathers. This blend is described by percentage and the warmth that the duvet will provide is measured as a tog rating. So, you could have a 90/10% down feather blend duvet with a rating of 12 tog.

Tog rating is related to the amount of air that a duvet traps. So, a higher down/feather blend will be warmer and lighter, yet more comfortable than any other duvet. The table below indicates the use of tog to measure a duvet’s climatic suitability.

When buying a down duvet inner and down pillows it is important to consider your sleeping environment. Do you like to sleep with windows open? Do you live in a moderate winter area?

Personal choice and financial awareness are the two factors that will affect the choice of a down/feather duvet. Ethically sourced down and feathers are not cheap. You are however, buying a product that will last at least 10 – 15 years with proper care.

It is important that the casing is good down-proof fabric, look for a product with the Okeo-Tex Standard 100 label. This ensures that all components adhere to regulations regarding health and safety internationally.

Look for a box/square construction on the duvet – as pictured below:

This ensures that the filling does not ‘move’ too much and is evenly spread. Regular shaking is advised as this allows the down clusters to become plumped with air – maintaining the insulating property of your duvet.

I will be publishing a blog relating to the care, laundering and storage of down/feather products soon, so watch this space. Remember… regular cleaning of your duvet or pillow will ensure longevity and a hygienic sleep.

There is nothing more wonderful than a peaceful night’s rest, and under a down duvet you will experience that… night after night.

Linen Drawer believes in sleeping comfort and are able to assist you in your choice of a down/feather duvet and pillows. Please contact us should you require assistance or further information.

MOVING ON SWIFTLY?

Anyone who has moved house, flat or business will agree when I say that moving is an emotional and stressful time. The warm glow of anticipation, the bright dream of new home/office/business premises, all fade day by day – whittled away by planning, planning and still more planning.

Linen Drawer and Linen Drawer Manufacturing are moving premises in the last week of February/ early March. We have planned the move very carefully, in order to ensure a seamless transition and keep our clients’ orders rolling out, and hope that the execution is as meticulous as the planning. Our customers’ requirements always come first, and our intention is minimum disruption and a smooth transfer from one location to the next.

In reality the excitement tends to bubble out every time we visit or think about the new premises which Linen Drawer will be relocating to. A fizzy, sort of breathless feeling takes hold of us, and we start grinning like idiots and say things like “this is so great, we will eventually have enough space!” and “I am looking forward to having a lovely big showroom/office/factory”.

Of course, this doesn’t happen simultaneously to all of us. We could be sitting in a production meeting, and someone will have that crazy grin spread across their face and say “I am looking forward to having outside seating for the staff canteen!” Then Jimmy, our CEO, says “Guys, let’s focus please?” then it’s back to business again.

So, a sneak peek: Linen Drawer, 12F Louws Avenue, Paarl will have a bigger factory, more storage space, offices for all our admin staff, shady parking in front of the building for our customers, a large showroom/shop on the ground floor with a nook for partners, space to host training and promotions and security cameras for safety.

Of course, we are going to have a launch party as soon as we are happily settled, and we’ll invite all the neighbours too. There is a lovely décor store down the road, and rumours of an upmarket coffee shop opening right next door. Truly a one stop décor and lifestyle destination. We look forward to welcoming you at Linen Drawer, 12F Louws Avenue, Paarl, from the 7 March 2018.

All we have to do now is survive the actual, physical move of a business that has been in the same premises for almost eight years, and a fully equipped bed linen manufacturing plant that has been growing rapidly for four and a half years! Wish us luck!

Does colour really affect your mood?

Have you ever found yourself feeling antsy in a red room, or serene and relaxed in a blue room? For centuries artists and scientists have believed that colour has a profound impact on a person’s mood and behaviour.

Colour psychology, the study of how colour affects mood, is one of the most important factors taken into account by marketers, artists and designers. Whilst colour perception is subjective, and much of our colour perception is determined by our culture, there is no doubt that we are instinctively affected differently by warm and cool colours.

One study showed that warm-coloured placebo pills were reported as more effective than blue-coloured placebo pills, whilst another showed that the colour red causes people to react with greater speed and urgency. In some cities, the installation of blue-coloured street lights had a major impact on reducing crime.

Linen Drawer is a trusted manufacturer and distributor of top quality home textiles, and has a wide variety of products to choose from in all the colours of the rainbow:

Red

Described as warm, passionate and intense, the colour red can evoke feelings of love and warmth, but is also sometimes associated with anger. It is energetic, and is a great colour to use around the home in bursts, especially with white and grey. A pop of red in your office could do wonders for productivity!

Blue

The colour blue is associated with calmness and serenity, and is one of the most popular colours.Though it promotes tranquillity, some also perceive it as cold. There is an association between blue and reliability, which is why major businesses such as financial institutions choose blue for their logo and branding. It is a popular colour for bedrooms and children’s rooms.

Green

Green is associated with nature and the outdoors, and symbolises good luck, health and tranquillity. The colour is often used for relieving stress as it has a calming effect. Studies have shown that when a person is in a green environment, their muscles are more relaxed and their pituitary gland is stimulated (a pea-size structure at the base of the brain that produces critical hormones). The effect is calming and stress-relieving.

Yellow

The colour yellow is attention-grabbing, bright and warm. It is considered the most fatiguing colour to the eye because of the high amount of light that it reflects, so it is best used in small doses around the home or office.

Though it is bright and cheerful, yellow is also linked to frustration. Because of its ability to draw attention, it is a popular choice for notice boards, traffic signs and advertisements.

Purple

The symbol of royalty and wealth, purple also represents wisdom and spirituality. It creates an air of decadence, and is often described as “luxurious”. As such, it’s a lovely colour to incorporate in the bedroom or living room.

Because it’s also seen as a creative stimulant, purple can be used in creative spaces such as art rooms, workshop venues and offices of writers, designers and creatives.

Orange

Orange is considered an energetic colour associated with feelings of excitement and enthusiasm. Because of its attention-grabbing abilities it is a popular colour for branding.

Because orange is prominent in nature (think citrus fruit, sunsets and autumn leaves), it often conjures up feelings of comfort and warmth. Use in bursts around the home.

White

The colour white is traditionally associated with cleanliness and purity. Because of its brightness, white can convey a sense of spaciousness. However, when overused, it can seem sterile and cold. For some, white has a “blank canvas” effect, making them feel inspired. For others, it is bland and unfriendly. We recommend white a base colour, combined with other colours of your choice.

HOW TO LAUNDER YOUR BED LINEN

Laundry is a fact of life – like taxes and death, it spares no-one. Unless you are one of the fortunate few who can say that they never do laundry, this article might help you understand how best to care for your bed linen.

Linen Drawer attaches a wash care label to all bed linen. This shows the size, the fabric composition and the washing instructions. The washing instructions are the result of in depth knowledge of the fabric – not just something dreamed up by Linen Drawer, andfor best results, should be adhered to as closely as possible when laundering the bed linen.

Machine wash (plus temperature) – This indicates that the bedding product can be machine washed at the specified temperature. It is necessary to wash at this temperature in order to clean the bedding properly. Body fluids and oils on the bedding are removed in hot (60ºC) water with detergent. Like washing your dishes in cold water, one will not get a great result from washing your bed linen at cool temperatures.

Another function of the hot (60ºC) wash, is to develop the shrinkage allowance which has been added / built into the bed linen. Should this not be developed, the bedding will appear larger, and will not fit properly. Shrinkage in 100% cotton and linen products is only fully developed after 5 – 6 washes in hot water. Please wash all bedding after purchase and before use.

Do not bleach – Bleaching 100% cotton or linen bedding will result in yellow marks on the bedding. Bleach weakens the cotton fibres, which can result in holes and tears appearing in the product. To remove stubborn stains, please refer to our website: https://www.linendrawer.co.za/resources/advice-on-stain-removal which has a comprehensive guide on stain removal, or if all else fails feel free to contact us at info@linendrawer.co.za

Warm iron – Cotton is best ironed with a hot iron (3 dots), while the fabric is slightly damp.Make sure though that there is no steam or moisture trapped in the bedding after ironing, when the bed linen is packed away, asmoisture on the bed linen can lead to mould developing on the bedding.

Do not dry clean – It is unnecessary to dry clean cotton and linen bedding. Dry cleaning is a ‘cold process’ which does not allow the shrinkages to develop in the product. Additionally, the chemicals used in the dry-cleaning process may affect the dyes on the satin stitching and embroidery.

May be tumble-dried – Recommended if bed linen cannot be line dried outside. Tumble drying until almost dry is advised, so that the bed linen maintains some moisture, prior to being ironed with a hot iron.

At Linen Drawer we are committed to offering our clients the best possible service – whether it be products or information. Please contact us should you have any queries – remember that there is nothing like an unnecessary question, and we welcome all queries! Happy Laundry Day!!

HOW TO CHOOSE BED LINEN?

Confronted by the mindboggling array of bedding and bed linen options available, what motivates your choice and how can you be sure it’s the best product for you?

At Linen Drawer we pride ourselves on our extensive knowledge of bed linen, and what types of fabric are suitable for different climates and situations. A quick aside: We do not recommend polyester or polyester blend fabrics…ever, as they are not perfectly comfortable and do not have the healthy-sleep properties of pure cotton or pure linen bedding.

We have discussed this matter extensively, chatted tomany of our customers and tapped the best minds in the industry… to come up with this simple plan:

Ask – What can I spend? If you are price sensitive then choose a lower thread count – it will be just as durable and comfortable but will cost a little less. If price is a minor concern then the higher thread counts – 300, 400, 600 and pure linen – may be more suitable.

Ask – crisp or soft? Do you like crisp or soft bed linen? If the answer is crisp – choose 100% cotton percale in 200 or 300 thread count, or pure linen bed linen. If the answer is soft – choose a 100% cotton sateen weave in 400 or 600 thread count. Make sure that you touch the fabric that you are expecting to sleep on!

Ask – Where will the bedding be used? The end use, whether a spare bed, your own bed or your children’s, will determine your choice. Generally, ask the above two questions when making this decision. For instance, you might want your baby sleeping on soft, silky 400 thread count sateen weave, or your little boy on serviceable 200 thread count cotton percale.

Ask – What colour do I want? At Linen Drawer we can offer so many options: We stockWhite, Duck egg, Grey, Cream and Taupe 200 thread count cotton percale, and White, Sand, Slate and Blue Vapour 400 thread count Egyptian cotton. We also stock 300 and 600 thread count in white, as well as Pure Linen in white. If you have specific colour matching requirements, we can embroider and satin-stitch in any colour to match your bed-room colour scheme.

Where water quality is a problem and borehole water is used to do the laundry, Taupebed linen rather than pure white…may be more suitable.

Easy? Of course! Any other questions? We stand by our commitmentto provide advice and assistance in providing answers to all queries. Mail us at info@linendrawer.co.zaor contact us directly by phoning +27 21 872 0108.

THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING!

I look forward to writing this blog every year. This is where the team from Linen Drawer express our sincere gratitude towards our clients, suppliers and co-workers.

Gratefulness has been proven to have physical benefits as well as the more obvious mental and spiritual benefits. Showing and experiencing gratitude is good for you.

Recent research has shown that people who express more gratitude have fewer aches and pains, better sleep and stronger mental clarity.

The expression of gratitude has measurable effects on our lives; when we express more gratitude, we become more empathetic and have increased goodwill towards others.

It’s quite simple really – if you appreciate something you take better care of it. This extends to health, relationships, friends, clients, and our businesses. In fact, all areas of our lives.

What about gratitude in tough times? Its easy to be grateful when things are going well, but studies have shown that people who habitually show gratitude are capable of experiencing it even when rough times hit.

In the face of brokenness, gratitude has the power to heal and bring hope, and help us cope.

So, with hearts full of thankfulness, we want to say “Thank you!” to our clients. You are the people who always come first, who support us and who help us expand our services and products. We hope to keep improving!

Thank you also to our suppliers. Thanks for supplying products that we can proudly endorse and thank you for staying the course with us in our efforts towards bettering ourselves.

Finally, a big thank you to the staff and workers at Linen Drawer and Linen Drawer Manufacturing. You make every day unique.

Your enthusiasm and work ethic contribute to making the company a wonderful work environment. I am truly grateful to be part of the Linen Drawer family and for the opportunities that I have been given.

From all of us, from me to you – we are grateful! Thank you!

MAKE UP DEMONS

At Linen Drawer we hear all the woes of laundry day – red wine, blood, sunblock, and the dreaded make-up stains! Of course, as a host it is impossible to forbid guests to wear make-up, but these stains do seem to be tougher than most to eradicate from bed linen and towels.

A two-step approach works best – firstly treat the stain as soon as possible. Do not allow the stain to “set”. Then you will need the following:

1. Old towel to put behind the stain you are treating 2. Good quality liquid dishwasher 3. Small soft brush – old toothbrush 4. Hydrogen peroxide solution 3% 5. Rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) 6. Baby wipes 7. Small soft cloth for rubbing stain

If the stain is “fresh” try rubbing gently with Baby wipe. If stain persists – identify what you think it is. Lipstick is best treated with rubbing alcohol on the small cloth.

Mascara, eye-liner, eye-shadow, and blusher respond well to dishwashing detergent and warm water. Place the towel behind the stain, apply the “solution” and rub gently with either the soft toothbrush or small cloth. Allow the worked-on stain to stay with the solution on, and then rinse in tepid water (never hot, as it might “set’ remnants of the stain). If stain persists repeat treatment. Once stain has been removed, launder whole item as normal. Do not iron before checking whether stains are completely removed.

Liquid foundation can be removed with a hydrogen peroxide solution. Dampen small cloth and apply to stain. Follow the same procedure as above and then launder as normal, taking care not to iron before you are sure the stain totally gone.

To remove nail polish – hopefully sooner than later – use acetone (nail polish remover) to stain with small cloth and dab until all is absorbed and polish is removed. Launder as normal.

Kiss stains goodbye following the above procedures! Remember the friendly staff at Linen Drawer are always ready to assist with any stain removal problems.

CHRISTMAS JOY

It is easy to become totally silly when speaking about Christmas. There is so much joy and anticipation associated with the festive season thatI need to focus my mind on the sensible to get the best out of this joyous season.

Around October I start to feel that there’s something I should be aware of…and it takes me a while to realise that the something… is that Christmas is only a few months away. Then the lists start – gifts, food, shopping, to-do’s, must happens, and more. I am proud to report steady progress in having a relaxing and relativelystress-free Christmas as the years move on, and I come to realize the true meaning of Christmas.

The most important aspect is the joy and tingling anticipation that these Holy days evoke. Joy because the message of Christmas is universal – joy and peace to all mankind. Anticipation is the less spiritual side of this, and it’s all about the gifts, the celebration, the twinkling lights, the sense of well-being and relaxation, contemplating the happy faces around you.

Christmas is about giving. The most joy is derived from seeing the happy faces when unwrapping lovely gifts, seeing the enjoyment that togetherness and sharing bring to the whole family. Giving of your time is the most precious gift of all and says that you care so much. Time spent together with friends and family is precious and it is here that the memories and stories of a lifetime originate.

I must share that the Linen Drawer team look forward to Christmas with great anticipation. We discuss decorations, food, venues, guests and other weighty issues with fervour – all with the Linen Drawer year end party in mind. Every year we stop work just before Christmas and take the afternoon off. This is to celebrate and honour the efforts of all the staff members in making Linen Drawer a successful business. Without them Linen Drawer would cease to exist, and this fact is celebrated by enjoying a relaxed and fun time with good food and fun games.

At Linen Drawer the Christmas season and the time leading up to it is a very busy period. Orders are processed and every client must be happy with their order! We offer you easy gift shopping options like personalised bed linen, beautiful Egyptian cotton gowns, embroidered table linen and many more lovely items (Visit our webpage https://www.linendrawer.co.za/tabling-gifts). It’s as easy as a mouse click and you will have made a loved one so happy!

So, bring on the twinkling fairy lights, the glittering tinsel, ‘snowy’ Christmas trees, bright baubles, green, red, gold and silver decorations of all shapes and forms. Play the Christmas music, the carols and popular songs. Gather the family and friends to celebrate, sharing time and gifts with loved ones. Feel the love and peace that are the true gifts of Christmas!

SOULFUL SHADES

How would you choose colours for new products? The array of tones and shades is mind boggling and predicting what will be suitable for bed linen is a daunting task. Well, at Linen Drawer we aren’t easily daunted and, deciding to add colour to our range of Egyptian cotton percale, we set about making the choice in a methodical and analytical manner.

Trends identified were Plants/Nature, Nautical/Sea, Opulence, New Nostalgia and Traditions Reworked. Colours associated with these were varied but the emphasis throughout was on deep natural colours. The inspiration was taken from the plants, water, stones, minerals and animals that surround us.

Armed with this information we analysed our existing product colours in order to see what was ‘missing’. We decided that a we needed a light, medium and dark colour. The light colour we chose was Sand – a wonderful tone that will complement and highlight many of our existing colours, such as taupe, duck-egg, cream, grey and white. Entirely natural, yet sophisticated, it is a welcome addition to our range.

The medium shade we chose was Blue Vapour – the colour of the deep blue sea on a cloudy day. This intense blue is both silvery and blue, and sits very well alongside the colours that Linen Drawer use to produce their superb bed linen.

As our dark colour we looked no further than the fabulous Slate. Not black, not grey, but an intense mixture of the two. The result is a colour of incredible depth and resonance, reinforcing the modern trend of pared down opulence.

The result of our decision to enhance our offering to you, our customer, is that these new colours are available in 400 thread count Egyptian cotton percale. The sateen weave adds to the beauty of the fabric giving it a soft handle and wonderful depth of colour. The fabrics have been tested and have excellent colour and light fastness, meaning that they will stay beautiful for as long as you have them.

Look at the photos attached, watch our Facebook page, or visit our showroom in Paarl to see more examples of these luxurious new colours.

WELCOMING JOHANNESBURG

We set off early on Sunday 6 August on our journey to Decorex Johannesburg 2017. A very long drive lay ahead – symbolic of our journey to Decorex exhibiting in total. Fortunately, no murders were committed and no speed fines incurred in the course of the drive, and soon we were concentrating on our Tom-Tom’s directions to the apartment we had rented.

The two days that preceded the opening of the exhibition at Gallagher Convention centre were frantic. There was much Gautrain’ing, Uber’ing and shopping. Hard work and amazing co-operation from our agents and furniture suppliers characterised these pre-show days. The absolute dedication from Johann and Ernie du Toit, Ronel Currin and the teams from Blockhouse, Ultimate Mattress, Persepolis and Incanda who helped us set up the stand. The result was FABULOUS! Our products were showcased beautifully and the stand at Decorex drew very favourable comments and many compliments.

We kicked off the show on Women’s’ Day – 9th August- and we attracted many visitors with our offerings of sweeties to “celebrate” Women’s’ Day. This led to curiosity about who and what we were, and an entry into our competition. Fortunately, the sweeties lasted all day, and we were able to give one to just about every woman that passed the stand.

The rest of the days passed in a happy blur- meeting the extremely trendy and stylish exhibition go-ers, answering queries and making new contacts. The friendliness and interest from the public was very impressive. We have vowed to return next year, bigger better and even more ready to knock the socks off all exhibition visitors!

Our drive back seemed shorter although we were really tired. There was lots of laughter and teasing but no incidents. The road was relatively quiet and the weather was good for travelling. Arriving home on Monday evening was so great and a thoroughly good night’s sleep was had by all!

As you can see from the photo’s Gauteng welcomed us and we are truly grateful and happy to have had the opportunity to showcase wonderful Linen Drawer products at Decorex Johannesburg 2017.

The winner of the Linen Drawer Decorex Competition was drawn on Friday 18 August 2017. He is Mr Alan Salamon, who will be visiting Cape Town next week and promised to visit with us at Linen Drawer. Congratulations to you!

PUT A SPRING IN YOUR STEP

September in the Southern Hemisphere is all about spring. Spring is in the air. Sometimes it is a chilly spring, and our optimism about summer’s arrival is quenched by rain showers and snow.

How to welcome spring into your home? Easy, have a look at your mattress! We have all seen mattress advertisements of the gazelle-like leaps out of bed. Incredibly these can become reality with a few basic checks.

We spend roughly a third of our lives sleeping or in bed. It makes sense that the comfort we experience here impacts on all aspects of our lives. If you think you need a new mattress because you wake up bent double and in pain, have a look at the following:

When last was your mattress turned and aired? Do you need a mattress-topper to improve the sleeping comfort of your mattress? Do you sit on your mattress when dressing? What does your bed base/frame look like? Who is jumping on your mattress?

Your decision to purchase a new mattress depends on your answers to the above. Should you look at a new mattress purchase consider the following:

Bed frames – height and design will be dictated by your décor scheme and personal preference. As your mattress lies on the base, it needs to ‘work’ with your mattress and not hamper the comfort you should experience.

Mattress – for a couple the recommended mattress is often a high-quality pocket sprung mattress, as it is beneficial to both sleepers. For those suffering from allergies a memory foam mattress is suggested as it offers comfort and is made from materials which are less irritating to sensitive individuals. Memory foam mattress also benefit those who suffer from joint pain.

There are other choices of mattress, of course – like futons, air and waterbeds in which air and water respectively provide the support. Adjustable beds with their specialised mattresses are also an option and provide comfortable sleep options.

At Linen Drawer, we specialise in ‘dressing’ your mattress – whatever your choice! We recommend pure cotton or linen bedding, and can custom make to fit any type of mattress you choose. Our motto is ‘comfort and style’ and we stand by that. We would like you to make the best choices for your sleeping comfort to ensure that the spring in your step remains there – throughout all the seasons!

LONGER NIGHTS AND SHORTER DAYS

Winter used to be a time of hardship and suffering, characterised by starvation and death. Fortunately, that is no longer the case, and enjoying the winter months is a very real option for many of us. With this in mind, may I make a few suggestions for filling the rather short winter days and long evenings?

Take advantage of the time indoors and take an online course or tutorial – learn to make something or polish an existing skill. Take a nap – of course under your Linen Drawer bedding or throws, but make serious and guiltless use of time indoors. Take this idea one step further by having a whole day as a ‘pyjama day’. Involve the family and read or watch television or home movies whilst lounging in bed.

Make some cookies or soup, and invite friends to share – a short winter’s day becomes even shorter when shared with friends and family. Lay the table beautifully, using your beautiful Linen Drawer table linen, polish the crystal glasses and treat your guests to a luxurious meal. The simplest food, presented beautifully, tastes absolutely delightful. If you don’t want the hassle of a full meal, try giving an afternoon tea party. Involve all members of the family in the preparing of tea time treats and decorating the tea table.

Does this sound too tame? Well then spend an hour doing some exercise or yoga. Online courses are often aimed at absolute beginners and it could be a fun way of involving the whole family for a couple of hours. Take advantage of a crisp winter’s day to take your dog for a walk – dress warmly, be brisk and the great feeling of being outdoors will warm you all day.

If you have smaller children, a story time hour is always fun- either read stories aloud, or make up your own. Give them a chance to add to the story. Get comfy under warm blankets and enjoy discovering the extent of a child’s imagination.

My ultimate favourite winter pastime is snuggling under a warm throw from Linen Drawer, a cat on my lap and reading a book by a favourite author. This is not very sociable, as my family reminds me repeatedly, but it is the only time that I can zone out and enjoy some ‘me’ time. When their nagging gets to me, I spring into action; cook something hearty and healthy, tidy a drawer or cupboard, sort out a wardrobe and generally perform domestic miracles until they beg me to go back to my book! Mission accomplished!

DECOREX - OUR JOURNEY TO JOHANNESBURG

My to-do lists have been made since we exhibited at the Cape Town Decorex show, but I think that this is going to be a very different experience from the Cape Town exhibition. We had follow up, post-mortem and strategy meetings in order to clear our minds and prepare for the Johannesburg Decorex show.

Decorex will be held at the Gallagher Convention centre and stretches across many halls. The Linen Drawer stand is in Hall 5 and we are in stand L24. It is a corner stand so we are not easy to miss.

You are cordially invited to please visit us at the stand. Jimmy (our CEO), myself, Johan, Ernie and Ronel will all be in the stand at various times. We can assist you with any queries you might have about our extensive product range and how to get the most out of your bed, bath and table linen and you will have the opportunity to experience the wonderful Linen Drawer products first hand.

We are also running a competition – merely placing your business card in the proverbial “hat,” entitles you to an entry! For those who don’t have business cards, fill in the competition entry forms and voila! You could be a winner. The prize we are offering is a set of 400thread count Egyptian cotton bed linen in your chosen bed size in one of the new colours we are launching at Decorex Johannesburg.

New colours? Yes, you heard correctly: We are launching a new mini range of 400thread count colours, which will be showcased for the very first time at our stand at Decorex. They have been chosen because the fabric is excellent quality, wonderfully soft and lustrous, and the colours are on trend; dovetailing beautifully with the current Linen Drawer range.

Our agents will have the colours available to show you should you not be able to visit our stand. Watch our Facebook page for the sneak peeks of the colours and photos of the stand at the exhibition.

At Linen Drawer in Paarl, we have been very busy. Samples, brochures, hand-outs, freebies, ‘feeler’ samples, ‘waterfalls’ and embroidered items have been made and are ready to be displayed for all to see, feel and experience the wonderful Linen Drawer products. We have given our best and are happy to share it with you, so do pay us a visit and meet the team!

SNUG AS A JUNE BUG

June in South Africa is a month marked by Youth Day and Father’s Day.

Father’s Day is an opportunity for us to honour the dedication and love that our fathers have shown us. Fatherhood does not necessarily have to be biological, and many of my friends have benefitted from having a wonderful ‘father’ in their lives.

On Youth Day we honour our young people because the future is in their hands.

Actually the month of June is named after the Roman goddess Juno. She was a very important deity and was the patroness of marriage, partnerships, protector of the state and wise counsellor.

In the Southern Hemisphere, June is the first month of winter. Days are shorter, nights are longer. The winter solstice this year is on Wednesday 21 June. This is the shortest day of the year. With the sun setting earlier and days shortening, we look forward to winter.

Winter is characterised by cold and darkness. Our ideas of winter however, are governed by the Northern Hemisphere winters – which are colder and darker than any we have here in Africa. South African winters are crisp and cold, often sunny (except for the Western Cape) and very energising. A winter walk in the crisp air brings a healthy flush to your cheeks and puts a spring into your step.

Evenings smelling of wood-smoke and cold, encourage us to snuggle under the warmest blankets and throws (all from Linen Drawer, of course), while enjoying a mug of hot chocolate or gluhwein. Children with cold rosy cheeks running across lawns crunchy and white with early frost, trees with bare branches, snow on mountain tops, crackling fires and long winter nights – all these are evocative of a South African winter.

And in the Western Cape - rain. Slick roads, grey skies, black bare branches of oak trees, mountains shrouded in cloud for days and days. Here the impression is of hibernation and hunkering down against the elements. Rainy days when the smallest streams become raging rivers and flooding is a constant worry. These are the times when the beautiful colours of a Hinterveld mohair blanket or Horizon throw are an antidote against the grey skies and streaming windows.

Don’t dread the winter – embrace the cold, and use the chilly weather to indulge in soft snuggly bed linen, warm pure cotton blankets, mohair rugs and throws, long visits with friends around the fire, hearty meals, indulgent desserts and cheerful conversations. By fully enjoying the cold and bright winter days, we honour the season in which the foundations of new growth are laid.

MIDWINTER CELEBRATIONS

MIDWINTER - A time of the solstice – the longest night and shortest day. A time when the rhythm of time and days is subtly slowed and altered. A time of sharing and feasting. A celebration of the solstice as the days lengthen from then onwards. A time for connecting with our loved ones and families in celebration of life and living. A time of quiet reflection and the promise of future growth.

During these chilly winter days, our natural inclination is to turn inwards, contemplating and meditating. Spend more time listening, watching and honouring the slower, quieter rhythm of the season. Sharing of time or hospitality is also a way of honouring the season. It shows a faith in the coming harvest and plentiful times that lie ahead.

Traditionally the Yule time feast, or Midwinter feasts, happen to coincide with Christmas. But in the Southern Hemisphere midwinter is on June 21, the time of the winter solstice, and it seems silly to celebrate Christmas then.

The solution is quite simply to celebrate the real meaning of Christmas/Yule during the time of Midwinter. The love, caring and feasting which one associates with Christmas festivities are easy to translate into our Southern Hemisphere winter months. Who needs an excuse to be hospitable?

During the Midwinter celebrations, homes were decorated with evergreen branches to signify everlasting life, and the colours of red, gold, white and green were used to honour the pagan spirits and gods. No one was turned away at the Midwinter or Yule feasts. Today we keep those traditions – decorating our homes and showing hospitality to family, friends and even strangers.

At Linen Drawer, we make it very easy for you to join in this wonderful time. We have the most gorgeous Designer Table Linen with which to adorn your Midwinter feast table

Our Bayede range of table linen boasts a pure red set of table runner, place mats and tablenapkins – all brightly finished with contrasting ric-rac braid in the colours of the festival.http://www.linendrawer.co.za/bayede-tabling

GREENERY – MORE THAN JUST A COLOUR?

The month of May is usually not one we South Africans associate with the colour green. In the Western Cape it is autumn, and often cloudy with rain and wind. Inland the first frosty mornings, with leaves turning shades of reds and browns, announce that winter is on its way.

In the Northern Hemisphere May is the month of full spring – riotous green! Sap is rising and all plants are bursting with new growth and vigour. It is the month in which we celebrate Mother’s Day, which also has associations with fertility and rebirth. The gemstone associated with the month of May is the Emerald – suitably green and very precious.

The colour of the year 2017 is Pantone col 15-0343 Greenery. This colour and shades and variations of it are already weaving their way into our lives – fashion, home décor, make-up, architecture and gardens. This crisp bright green reminiscent of Granny Smith apples or freshly cut grass is officially now the ‘it’ colour.

Fortunately green is the world’s second favourite colour, coming in after blue. Our eyes are more sensitive to green however and we perceive more shades of green than any other colour. Green, in colour psychology, is the colour of harmony. Managed carefully, colour can influence consumer behaviour and purchasing behaviour.

Green boosts creativity and is seen to be fresh and healthy. It is perceived as positive and confident as well as calming. We know that being in nature is beneficial to our moods and emotions in terms of health and stress relief. Those of us living in an urban environment crave connection to the outdoors, and look forward to the fresh pops of Greenery coming our way.

The consensus seems to be to use Greenery sparingly – after all it is a very vibrant colour. Effective use would be to incorporate touches of the colour into a décor scheme, and not using it as the predominant colour. Have a look at the touches of green in the pictures attached – touches add freshness and vibrancy.

At Linen Drawer we are always on trend, and offer our clients various products in the colour and shades of Greenery. We like to highlight an oxford border of a satin stitched duvet cover or pillowslip in bright fresh green, or add a monogram on a white fluffy towel in this lovely colour. Our Horizon throws come in Sage, a soft muted green, as well as the other colours that are so useful in décor schemes. Hinterveld blankets have a pure green mohair blanket in colour “I’m Ready”, as well as others in shades of green which will warm you as well as lift your spirits.

Whether you are seeking calm and harmony, or a dash of colour to add a vibrant update to your décor scheme, Greenery is symbolic of new beginnings. This year allow the crisp, vibrant colour of Greenery to influence your mood and carry you through the year!

Linen Drawer produce and supply other products. In addition to our blankets and throws, quality bed and bath linen, duvets and pillows, we offer a range of table cloths and accessories. Your one stop online home ware and decor store. www.linendrawer.co.za

HOLD MY HEART FOREVER

“Mothers hold their children’s hands for a short time, but their hearts forever” – Unknown

The quote above encompasses what being a mother is all about. The month of May is named after Maia, the Greek goddess of fertility, nuturing and growth. In the Christian tradition the month of May is named after the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus Christ.

During the month of May we honour our mothers and are reminded of what motherhood means. Motherhood is not only a biological relationship; some of the people I revere as mothers had nothing to do with my birth, but they certainly are part of my life as mothers. Mothers all over deserve praise and elevation – not only on Mother’s Day, but throughout the year. Often mothers are taken completely for granted, and only revered when they are not there any more!

Being a mother is really difficultrd and no one tells you this when you are expecting your children. Suddenly your heart is walking about, driving in cars, partying till dawn, and is generally acting as if it’s invincible! At the same time none of us would have it any other way – there is no safe road you travel in being a mother.

I am not deliberately painting a dismal picture of motherhood, indeed, most mothers would have it no other way. I feel that May and particularly Mother’s Day gives us a wonderrful opportunity to show our thanks to our mothers. Lets spoil the mothers in our lives in May with what we say and what we do. The inclusion of a gift from LinenDrawer on Mother’s Day will brighten the heart of any mom. Choose from our wonderful range of pure cotton bedding, Egyptian cotton gowns, mohair throws and blankets, pure cottontravel rugs and throws, pure down duvet inners and pillows, exquisite table linen and personalisedfluffy towels. The choice is yours, and the only boundaries are your imagination. Shop online (delivery is free to anywhere in S.A.) or come into our showroom in Paarl.http://www.linendrawer.co.za/

THE FULLNESS OF SUMMER

Sweltering – the only word to describe the Western Cape at this time of year, and much of the country as well. In Paarl, at Linen Drawer, all the fans are working full time and there is constant traffic to the fridge to fetch cold water for hot and thirsty staff.

Hot days are followed by warm nights and that’s when the fun starts. It is the time of al fresco dining. Late sunsets are followed by balmy evenings; no wind, a slight cooling of the air and the only place to be is outside – dining and enjoying the wonderful summer evenings. These are the times for counting of blessings and immersing ourselves in the absolute fullness of summer.

Of course these evenings are an excuse to bring out the beautiful Linen Drawer tabling http://www.linendrawer.co.za/linen-drawer-tabling - see some photos below:

Late summer is also the time of weddings and engagements. There is no better setting for a celebratory table than in a beautiful garden, in dappled shade, with a table beautifully laid with Linen Drawer table linen, great food and wine, lovely flowers and the promise of the best of times.

Be assured that all our table linen is fully washable, can be bleached, and with proper care will last and last. We can customize your Linen Drawer table linen to your specifications with embroidery, satin or hemstitching. Odd table sizes are not a problem to us, as our experienced team can make table linen to suit just about any table!

Hurry – because the summer nights will not last forever, and March, the month of changes is coming. It is a month to look forward to – mornings are darker, the sun rises later and there is a cool tang outside that promises weather changes. The air has a clean shimmer that offsets the turning leaves and the summer drawing to a close. The glorious days of late summer are still perfect for evenings spent outside.

Be prepared when the cool south-easterly wind starts up; wrap a soft and comfy pure cotton Horizon travel rug around your shoulders or drape it across your knees, have a look at the beautiful colours that will complement any décor scheme – indoors or outdoors http://www.linendrawer.co.za/throws-blankets/horizon-pure-cotton-throws Entertaining has never been easier!

READY FOR THE BIG CHILL?

The approach of winter always makes me feel a little sad. Summer is like a good friend; accepting, cheerful, uncomplicated and sometimes overly warm. Winter has a completely different feel – apart from the obvious temperature difference- more like a friend whom you really like, but are just a little less at ease with, someone who keeps you on your toes and challenges you daily.

The mornings are crisper, the days shortening and leaves are turning colour and starting to drop. Winter in the Western Cape is the best kept secret in South Africa. Winter here is cold, but not bone chillingly terrible, and hopefully mostly rainy. Sometimes we have snow – and everyone goes crazy and wants to see it, but all things considered, our winters are just wintery enough to make you want to snuggle deep under the softest, warmest Linen Drawer bedding bought specially for such days.

Of course, at Linen Drawer we are huge fans of these chilly winter months – because we have everything to ensure you stay warm and toasty throughout the season. I encourage you to have a look – we have you covered when it comes to the big chill! http://www.linendrawer.co.za/bedroom/

Our beautiful bedding in 400 and 600 thread count is known to be soft and comfortable – making it very difficult to get up out of bed on those chilly autumn and winter mornings. Or maybe you need the extra warmth of pure brushed cotton winter sheeting?

If you add apure down duvet and pillow inners, the process becomes a little more difficult. Feeling extra chilly? Add a pure cotton Horizon throw, or a Hinterveld mohair blanket. You are now in trouble – it would take a superhuman effort to leap out of that bed!

The only thing that could tempt me out of bed on a winter’s morning would be the prospect of a long hot bath or shower. After towelling off with Linen Drawer’s softest and fluffiest towels, I would enjoy a cup of hot chocolate snuggled in my thick towelling gown made from 100% cotton and embroidered with my personal logo.

We even have the solution to variably heated partners. Acknowledging the fact that a perfect partnership is based on compromise and acceptance, we call this fitted sheet the ‘Compromise’ sheet. We combine soft warm brushed cotton on half the sheet with crisp cool cotton percale on the other. We manufacture these to order and have had great feedback. At Linen Drawer we try to think out of the box!

The Compromise fitted sheet

PURE LINEN – BEST LAUNDERING TIPS

Pure linen is currently the subject of conversation on so many platforms. It is one of the most healthful and comfortable choices for bed linen, and many of our customers are choosing it because of these facts. Pure linen bedding from Linen Drawer will last for many years provided it is cared for properly.

Linen is a natural fibre, and some basic principles apply when laundering it:

Pure linen can be machine washed at 60̊ Celsius. Use liquid detergent that is suitable for use in hot water. Rinse the laundry well – I find a little lemon juice in the last rinse, no more than 125ml in 10litres of water is sufficient to remove the very last traces of detergent.

Never bleach or dry clean pure linen – stains can be removed in other ways (refer to our stain removal guides http://www.linendrawer.co.za/resources/advice-on-stain-removal Bleaching damages and weakens the natural fibres of pure linen.

Dry in direct sunlight, or tumble dry till just off damp. Ironing with a hot iron is advised when the linen bedding is slightly damp as this really results in a smooth product. Make sure linen is totally dry before folding and storing.

If you like your linen with a ‘washed’ look – slight creasing across the fabric – merely hang out to dry fully, fold and store.

As pure linen ages it becomes softer and even more luxurious, and your heirs will thank you for taking good care of your linen bedding!

Linen Drawer is a specialist producer and supplier of bed and bath linen. We sell to the hospitality and Décor industries and to discerning customers around the world are :Bedding, Duvet Covers, Linen, Bed Linen Egyptian Cotton and Baby Bedding …all available at www.linendrawer.co.za

AN EARLY START

The Linen Drawer journey started early this year. In fact you could say we were up and running at the crowing of the roosters. This would be totally appropriate as 2017 is the Year of the Rooster according to the Chinese Almanac. So once again Linen Drawer is on trend and in tune!

We have an exciting year ahead. New products are being investigated, new machinery for the factory is being purchased, our embroidery division is going from strength to strength (watch this space – new designs in the pipeline), and our staff are attending courses and seminars to develop skills which will benefit themselves, Linen Drawer and our customers.

The factory is bursting out of its seams, and we are looking forward to new ironing equipment and more satin stitching machines. These will enable us to execute orders and customisation faster. Our team of dedicated workers take such pride in their work and form such a lively dynamic addition to the Linen Drawer family.

Your bed companions are a private matter, but which bedding you are sleeping under is our immediate concern. At Linen Drawer we take sleeping comfort very seriously. It is our mission to ensure that your sleep experience is comfortable and healthy.

Sleeping under 100% cotton or linen is a healthy option. The benefits of natural fibres have been discussed at length in our blogs and on the website: http://www.linendrawer.co.za/blog

Take stock of your bedding; now is the time to donate or toss those pilled poly-cotton sheets and duvet covers you have been saving for that rainy day. What you gain by using poly-cotton in wrinkle-free/reduced bedding, is lost in the discomfort of sleeping on and under a product that is not 100% natural. You deserve to sleep in the best, and we have the best for you.

The most luxurious and comfortable choice is pure linen. Pure linen bedding; sheets, pillow cases and duvet covers that have been embroidered or hemstitched, ensure a supremely comfortable and aesthetically pleasing experience. Investing in beauty and comfort has never felt so good.

Linen Drawer also has 400 thread count Egyptian cotton bedding. Bed linen made from this splendid fabric is silky smooth and marvellously comfortable. Cool in summer and warm and light in winter, it is the choice of many discerning customers.

THE FULLNESS OF SUMMER

How often do you hear people saying:” I hate summer, I really can’t stand the heat?” Summer in South Africa is not a joke. But I do disagree with these feelings of apathy and despair.

There is nothing better than waking up early on a summer’s morning, the sky lightening with the first rays of the sun, stretching sleepy limbs on crisp cool percale bed linen, and feeling the well-being that a night’s rest on pure cotton bedding brings. The day beckons, and the morning is precious – the shimmery heat and beating sun are a reality – but not yet, for a few hours the morning is yours to enjoy and the fullness of summertime envelops you.

On hot summer days we look for coolness – food, drinks, clothing, bedding, shelter. There are wide choices when it comes to ‘beating the heat’ but it is worth considering the choice of bedding as being one of the most important of the lifestyle alterations to make in summer.

Simply put, we spend about a third of our lives asleep. Enjoying a good night’s sleep on pure cotton or linenbedding is a sensible choice to make. Replace your old poly cotton sheets and duvet covers with crisp 100%cotton bedding. Cool, freshly laundered 100% cotton or linen bedding is one of the great luxuries of the world – all our senses are soothed and satisfied when slipping into such a bed. The promise of sleep during which our bodies breathe naturally and feel cool all night is priceless.

Natural fibres, from which cotton and linen are made, have the ability to regulate body temperature, ensuring that you enjoy the benefits of a good night’s sleep and wake up cool and refreshed.

So enjoy summer by sleeping on crisp cotton or linen, and using all our other bedding and bath products. Find us at:http://www.linendrawer.co.za/bedroomand change your life. Seize that morning!

Reasons for using 100% Flax Linen for Your Garments and Sheets

untitled

While researching linen, I found many Scriptural reasons as well as scientific benefits which explain why Flax Linen is such a wonderful fabric. Here are just a few:

Bed Sore Resistant: According to Japanese medical research studies, bed-ridden patients do NOT develop bedsores when linen bed sheets are used.

Compatible: The flax cell is highly compatible with the human cell.

Hygroscopic, Permeable: Linen rapidly absorbs moisture (water, sweat and other body fluids); yet, it also yields moisture rapidly making it highly hygroscopic.

Hygienic: Linen is considered to be hygienic helping to relieve allergies and is used to filter fallout, radiation and gamma rays.

Filters: Homes are known to collect radioactive gas such as radon, especially after the installation of tightly sealing plastic windows.

Thermogenic: Linen is comprised of heat conductivity and high air permeability properties. Its heat conductivity is 5 times higher than wool’s and 19 times than that of silk.

Support Hormones: These properties help make a patient feel fresh and cool; yet, helps keep them warmer or cooler as it is an adaptogen to the present temperature needed.

Anti-static: Probably due to its 5,000 signature frequency and ability to reduce static in the body, Linen is known for helping to reduce fatigue and lift spirits.

EMF Friendly: Some studies indicate that the body may be protected from damaging electromagnetic frequencies especially when near electronic appliances, computers, Wi-Fi, cell phones, etc.

Purity of White: The studies on the color white and the reflection of light in linen is known to increase the body’s frequency energy adding more life and energy to those wearing and using linen.

Promotes Restful Sleep: Reported by many to promote better rest and sleep.

Durability: Linen is durable. Unlike some cottons that yellow with time, linen is prone to remain white and softer with each wash.

Hypo-allergenic: Helps avoid allergies causes by other fibers.

Burns: Burn and sunburn victims and those with problematic or hypersensitive skin or who suffer from dermatological disorders are often prescribed to sleep in or on white linen bedding to help relieve pain and discomfort.

Promotes Good Stewardship: Helps us to be good stewards of YHWH’s creation and promote a balanced environment since flax is a renewable resource and the linen produced from it is fully BIOdegradable.

Anti-Viral: Recent research conducted has confirmed that choosing pure linen sheets and clothing allowing for daily contact with the flax fabric may help to promote and increase the blood levels of immunoglobulin.

Odor Resistant: Pure linen helps to destroy bad odors.

Fertility Support: Recent studies have demonstrated that female fertility may be significantly increased by sleeping and procreating on pure white linen sheets.

What is Pure linen?

Pure Linen is a na tural fibre, made from the stalk of the flax plant. It is regarded in Europe as the best quality fabric. Europeans have long favoured linen for their sheeting because of its amazing properties. It softens the more it is used and washed, is extremely durable and can last for decades when cared for correctly. It is not uncommon that European families will pass linen sheets on to the younger generation as a family heirloom. Vintage linen is very desirable, it’s soft and the feeling is very hard to replicate by any mechanical process. Anyone that has trawled the antique shops of Italy would know that antique linen bedding is a highly prized and expensive commodity.untitled

Benefits of Pure linen Linen is a very durable fibre and has many benefits over cotton. - Linen is 30% stronger than cotton - Has a high moisture absorbency - Hypo-allergenic - Highly breathable - Structurally sound fibre so products keep their shape - Environmentally friendly – less water and chemicals to cultivate

A BRIEF HISTORY OF LINEN

Linen is a natural fibre, made from the stems of the flax plant.

untitled1Plain, cool, natural, long-lasting and elegant, linen was the most frequently used material after cotton in weaving in ancient times. According to the Egyptians, the God Isis was the founder of weaving and invented linen in order to wrap the body of his wife Osiris. In this era, linen cloths from Babylon were considered excellent. Egyptians manufactured linen by using various weaving techniques and used linen to dress / wrap their deceased tyrants and kings (mummies were wrapped in pure linen).

Linen was also popular in the Roman period and widespread throughout the Empire. During the Middle Ages, in France, when linen was found to heal skin diseases, it became more popular. untitled3With the invention of the loom in the 18th century, linen began to be used in large quantities.

Linen, which is often used in upholstery since it is long-lasting, doesn't hold dust or fade in sunlight. It is bright and cool and can be used just about anywhere as it becomes more beautiful as it ages.

SLEEP LIKE AN EGYPTIAN

Have you ever wondered why Egyptian Cotton is so in demand? Why it is so special? After a little investigation I found the following:plant-fibers-cotton-and-jute

Gossypium Barbadense is the Latin name for extra-long staple cotton. This is a species of the cotton plant that has extra-long fibres, and yields high quality fabric when spun and woven into fabric. Varieties of ELS (extra-long staple) cotton are Sea Island, Pima, Gizas, Suvin, and Xinjiang.

The cotton plant is a frost sensitive perennial plant that has yellow flowers and black seeds. It grows into a small bushy tree, and yields cotton with long silky fibres.maxresdefault

This type of cotton is planted all over the world – the West Indies, Central America, Australia, Western Africa, and of course in Egypt.

So Egyptian Cotton is the cultivar Gossypium Barbadense grown in Egypt. It is usually harvested or picked by hand, resulting in less damage to the fibres. The length of the fibre allows the weaving of the finest yarns, without sacrificing strength. This also allows deep dye penetration resulting in wonderfully bright colours. It is very soft and wonderfully luxurious, and without hesitation can be hailed as the finest cotton in the world.

beb2da47cd65bd8a3efff5dcc7bed87fUnfortunately “Egyptian Cotton” has become a buzz-word for anyone claiming to be selling up-market and luxury cotton goods. Do not be fooled – make sure the supplier of your products is aware of the authentication and certification of Egyptian cotton fabrics and products.

You can be assured that products bought at Linen Drawer, and sold as Egyptian Cotton, are actually that. Linen Drawer manufactures liwonderfully luxurious bedding from 400thread countEgyptian Cotton sateen weave fabric. We buy from certified suppliers of Egyptian Cotton, and our fabric is strictly quality tested so that a consistent standard is assured.

Sleeping on the finest Egyptian Cotton is an amazing experience. Such comfort is purely addictive!

RUB A DUB DUB ?

The festive season and entertaining go hand in hand. These are good times, but even in good times we have our challenges. Ever watched as a glass of wine is knocked over, curry is spilled or coffee is splashed across our beautiful Linen Drawer table linen?

At Linen Drawer we don’t only make Bed linen in wonderful Egyptian cotton, Pure Linenand crisppercale, we also make beautiful Table Linen. As a service to our customers, we offer Stain Removal tips on our website are an additional service Click Here to view more stain removal tips. So the despair you feel when faced with stains might become something of the past now.

Let’s tackle the Wine stains first; don’t apply cold water and salt to the table cloth– instead reach for a little soda water or just plain water if it’s handy. As soon as you can, wash in plenty of warm water and if the stain persists, rub with a little glycerine (available at most pharmacies) and wash as normal.

Then the Curry – reach for the glycerine again. First rinse in warm water, then rub with glycerine and let it stand for about 30 minutes, then wash normally.

As for the Coffee and the Tea which you may think will ruin the heirloom tabling – think again! Coffee is easier to get rid of, just rinse the stain with warm water, and then wash normally. Tea tends to stain, but the trusty glycerine to the rescue! Rinse the tea stain with warm water, apply glycerine and then wash normally.

I will continue with more pesky stains in my next mini blog – look out for it!

Sleeping comfort is core to our company ethos at Linen Drawer.  We feel very strongly about this.  The products we manufacture and sell at Linen Drawer are designed to ensure that health, and comfort are achieved and respected.  Sleeping comfortably should be the right of every person, yet this is not always the case.

The reason for this is quite simply that not everyone is aware of the requirements for a comfortable night’s rest.

The first one is that your room needs to be well ventilated and dark.

Secondly your choice of bed clothing (pyjamas) needs to be of natural fibres – 100% cotton, 100% linen, or 100% silk. These fabrics will keep you cool in summer and warm in winter.

The reason why natural fibres are excellent to sleep in is because the natural fibres “breathe” allowing your body’s temperature to be maintained at a constant comfortable level.

The third and most important requirement for a comfortable night’s rest is that your bedding – the sheets, pillow cases, duvet covers and blankets – are made from natural fibres.  This could be 100% cotton, 100% linen, or 100% silk. All these are natural fibres and these fabrics all “breathe”, allowing a regulation of the body temperature and ensuring a comfortable night’s sleep.

The use of synthetic fabric for bed linen is widespread.  Synthetic fibres are derived from oil/ plastic bases, and naturally do not absorb moisture.  Fabric made from these fibres is non-breathable, and uncomfortable to wear or to sleep under.

At Linen Drawer we only use 100% natural fabrics to manufacture our bed linen.  Check whether the components of your made up bed are all natural fabrics.  At Linen Drawer you can fit your bed out in natural fibre products:

  • Mattress Protectors – ours are made of pure cotton knitted fabric, laminated to a waterproof base – breathable and comfortable.
  • Pure Cotton or Linen Bedding – fitted sheets, flat sheets, duvet covers and pillowcases.  We make 200, 300, 400 and 600 thread count products as well as in pure linen.  The 200 and 300 thread count products will feel cool, crisp and lighter in weight during the summer months.  400 and 600 Thread count products will feel smooth, silky and soft because we use a fabric that has a sateen weave construction.  Our 400 thread count fabric is Egyptian Cotton and is very luxurious, as well as being cool and soft. Pure linen is even more breathable than cotton as it absorbs more moisture thus keeping you cooler in summer.

  • Duvet inners should also be made from natural products. Down and feathers are natural and therefore suitable for a comfortable night’s rest. Our Climabalance duvet inners have “climate zones” set into the duvet to regulate temperature ensuring that they are perfect for warmer weather, and right into autumn and winter. We also have combinations of down and feathers ensuring that the weight and warmth of your duvet is perfect for you requirements.
  • Blankets should be cotton, mohair or wool. All these are natural fibres and we stock a range that is suitable for all requirements and decor schemes.

At Linen Drawer we take your comfort very seriously. Our products are engineered to ensure that your health and comfort are catered to. Please contact us should you have queries or special requirements that you would like to be considered.

Goodnight and sleep well!

THERE’S AN ALPACA ON MY BED…

It is autumn, and winter, as they say, is coming. Thoughts turn to cozy fires, comforting warm beds and Hinterveld blankets. What are Hinterveld blankets? They are the most beautiful, interesting, stylish blankets and throws you will find anywhere….made from a host of mostly natural fibres, from wool and kid mohair to silk, and …you guessed it, alpaca.

Need to know more about these exciting blankets and throws?

The folks at Hinterveld have introduced a few new ranges this year that are sure to impress you with their beautiful colours and innovative fabric blends which always ensurebeautiful, warm, lightweight blankets for these chilly months.

I recently visited an Alpaca weaving studio and farm See http://www.alpacas.co.za/index.htmland found out that alpacas are similar to Lamas, but smaller, prettier and generally quite special. Their wool is especially soft and silky and very light in weight.

I was impressed by the variety of natural colours that are found in alpaca wool, ranging from creamy white through the tones of biscuit, caramel to chocolate brown, as well as greys ranging from pale grey right through to charcoal and black.

The sheer luxury of the fibres is reminiscent of cashmere. Alpaca has the same softness and lightness that cashmere has. The big difference is that alpaca wool is available in South Africa, as many farmers are realising the wonderful potential of these sweet fluffy animals.

The company that manufactures Hinterveld blankets has combined this wonderful yarn with silk to make blankets and throws. The range is called “Rhapsody” and the blankets are truly magnificent! The softness and warmth of these blankets is virtually unparalleled. An investment in one of these blankets or throws will give you many years of comfort and luxurious warmth….in style.

So, while you may not find an alpaca on your bed, if you are one of the fortunate few, you could find yourself with a beautiful blanket produced from the wool of the alpaca. Altogether a much better idea.

Linen Drawer are proud suppliers of Hinterveld blankets and offer the full range of blankets and throws.Click hereto check out the ranges and to buy yours today. SLEEP – THE NEW CHALLENGE

Linen Drawer specialise in providing sleeping comfort. Your quality of sleep is very important to us.

This subject of sleep is just as relevant today as it has always been. New research on the subject of sleep has emerged and the long and the short of it is that a good, deep sleep is vitally important for our wellbeing. Should want to get the most out of your sleep, read on…

Exploring the topic of sleep, it is useful to ask ourselves some questions:

Why do we sleep?

Well, we know that sleep is very important for optimal brain functioning as well asresting and restoring vigour to our bodies, but recent research has highlighted the function of sleep as being important in memory consolidation as well. Lack of sleep is associated with irritability, poor judgement, faulty decision making, as well as weight gain. These are convincing arguments for us to make getting a good night’s sleep a priority.

How much sleep does our body need?

Our society tends to glorify people who sleep between 4 – 6 hours a night. They are seen as productive and successful. In fact, the answer to the question of how much sleep we need is purely individual – if you are comfortable and can function at peak performance on 4 – 6 hours of sleep then that works for you.

Unfortunately most of us really need more than that. Recent research has shown that adequate sleep, sensible diet and regular exercise are the three critical components that are required for optimal health.

The following table is based on the latest research and prescriptions tabled by the National Sleep Foundation (USA).

  • Newborns  (0 -3 months) – 14 -17hrs daily
  • Infants (4-11months) – 12-15hrs daily
  • Toddlers (1-2 yrs) –11-14 hrs daily
  • Pre-schoolers (3-5yrs) – 10 -13 hrs daily
  • School age children (6 -13yrs) – 9-11 hrs daily
  • Teenagers (14 -17 yrs) – 8-10 hrs daily
  • Young adults (18 -25 yrs) – 7-9 hrs daily
  • Adults (26-64 yrs) – 7-9 hrs daily
  • Older adults (65+)  - 7-8 hrs daily

That’s all very well, you might say, but how do I achieve this?

In previous blogs we touched on the importance of comfortable bedding, bed linen and bed clothing. These are all aspects that contribute towards achieving a good night’s sleep. In addition here are some tips that may help you achieve this sometimes elusive goal…of getting a good night’s sleep, every night.

Tips to fall asleep naturally:

  • Make an effort to eat foods that contain tryptophan, which is an amino acid your body needs to make serotonin and melatonin.  Together these two substances regulate various physical functions.  When our bodies metabolise tryptophan it first makes serotonin, then uses this to produce melatonin.. Foods rich in tryptophan are dairy products, bananas, oatmeal, pork, turkey, chicken and soy products.  Melatonin makes you drowsy and lowers your body temperature.  Helping you to prepare for a good night’s sleep.

  • Darken your house– lessening light is the trigger that stimulates melatonin production. Our bodies are naturally tuned in to nature’s daily cycles. Dusk and night approaching signal a period of sleep.  Bright lights cause melatonin levels to drop.  Soft lighting in your bedroom is important as it encourages sleepiness. Light from electronic devices and television sends alerting signals to the brain, increasing the difficulty of falling asleep.  Try to ban electronics from the bedroom – let your brain settle for the night.

  • Create a new bedtime habit – you can train yourself into a new routine.  Repetition of certain tasks before bedtime helps to start a routine. Repeat the sequence every night and conclude it by getting into bed and putting off your bedside light.

  • Keep regular sleeping hours–if your body knows that at a certain time it is required to sleep, it’s likely that it will comply.  Schedule sleep as a priority, not as an option and be as firm about it as any other task on your ‘to do’ list.  Make sure that you don’t watch television in bed, work on your laptop, use your phone or read.

  • Pay attention to comfort- your bedroom should be a sanctuary dedicated to sleep.  You should feel relaxed and peaceful when you are there.  De-clutter your room. Paint the walls a soothing colour, ensure allbed linen andbedding is clean and fresh smelling and that the whole package is one of soothing and inviting calm.

  • Regulate the noise levels- our subconscious minds register sounds even when we are asleep, and this affects the quality of sleep we enjoy.  Make sure your bedroom is quiet.  Sounds from outside, or within the other rooms can be muffled by ‘white noise’ which is created by a sound conditioner.  An air purifier usually works very well as they have a soothing barely audible sound.

3

  • Exercise – regular activity has been proven to be very beneficial to ensuring a good nights’ sleep.  Strenuous exercise before bedtime is not recommended as it does not give the body time to recover and  reset itself for sleeping,

These are suggestions only, but are based on the recommendations from the National Sleep Foundation(USA) Of course all of the above really won’t work unless you are sleeping on bed linen created by the sleep and comfort specialists – Linen Drawer.

Should you have facilities or dinner parties that require table linen, the following blog is for you.

In general most individuals make use of Cotton, Polyester or Poly-cotton
table cloths and serviettes. This is a case of preference as one will only really feel the fabric when using the serviettes and few people will check what fabric they are made from.

To increase the life span of your table linen, it is important to launder correctly. It is also vital to put systems in place that will assist laundry staff or individuals to take better care of the tabling, for example.

Place plastic bins in the kitchen (where space is sufficient) where sorting ofhighly stained, medium or lightly stained items can occur. Even better would be a“bin” wherein the items can be placed to soak. These ideas will ensure thatby the time the table linen reaches the laundry, less time is spent on sorting and trying to remove stains along with washing and drying time.

The care labels on table linen can be broken down as follows:

THE COMPOSITION OF THE FABRIC:
Most table cloths are manufactured from either:
• 100% cotton or
• Blends of polyester with cotton or
• Polyester

WASHING

washingAll fibre types should be washed at low temperatures to
increase the life span of the table cloths. We do of course realise that in
order to remove stains you will need to wash at higher temperatures - check thelabel before doing so, as shrinkage may occur if the products weren’t manufactured to allow for this. The general recommendation is to wash at 40°C to 60°C.

BLEACHING

washingIt is not recommended that cotton fabrics be bleached as the bleach candegrade and break down the cotton fibre. Polyester cotton fabrics are less sensitive to bleach. In both cases, it is of utmost importance to ensurewhen using bleach it is correctly diluted, treatment in cold water and all residue of the bleach removed before washing . Should fabrics not be rinsed thoroughly, and washed at higher temperatures, it will probably result in holes. Do not bleach any coloured fabrics, as this will lead to fading and white spots on your table linen

IRONING

ironing (2)Generally hand irons should be sufficient for the ironing of table clothsand serviettes. Certain press irons, should your establishment have one, will also work very well. The table cloths and serviettes should be ironed with a warm iron.

In the case of cotton table linen, ensure that the products aren’t over dried as this makes ironing much tougher and time consuming.
When ironing polyester table cloths or serviettes they must be carefully ironed with a cool iron to ensure that the polyester doesn’t scorch.

TUMBLE DRYING
TUMBLE DRYINGThese products can normally be tumble dried. Of course over dryingshould be avoided as far as possible.

Table Linen Care: To iron or not to iron???

Table linens can transform any situation…

They can turn an everyday meal into a memorable affair. Not only for decorating purposes, they will also protect your table from spills and scratches and the napkins will protect your clothing from splashes of red wine. Whether you use table linens every day or just on special occasions, you’ll want to keep them looking their best.

Ironing an unwieldy tablecloth or dozens of napkins is probably the last thing you want to deal with when you’re planning a dinner party. Done properly, though, this task doesn’t need to be stressful.

On the other hand, ironing is not always crucial.

Today, we are sharing a secret with you. A secret for preparing a beautiful table for any occasion with no stress. This trick for ironing table linens will change your life, since this trick doesn’t even require an iron. All you need to do is lay the tablecloth and other table linens on the table the night before. Sprinkle them with water, smooth out the wrinkles with your hands and leave them to dry through the night. The next day they will be dry and wrinkle free.

If you still decide to iron your table linens, this is what you need to know. To iron a tablecloth, make sure it is damp. After washing, just hang on a rack and leave them to air dry until they are damp and ready for ironing. Iron in a back-and-forth motion over the entire length of the cloth, along the weave.

Storing table linen after ironing is a very important aspect, since linen tablecloths tend to get those pesky square folding lines. One of the best ways to store linen tablecloths after ironing is to fold them in thirds and gently hang across a hanger, so they don’t wrinkle. Another option is to roll them into tubes rather than folding them. You will need more storing space, but you will have pretty table linens all the time.

The Sumptuous World of Damask

A Chinese writer once likened the reverse side of a woven fabric to a language that has been translated: The threads are there, but the complexity of colors and shapes is lost. While this may be true of most textiles, damask is a dazzling exception. It is woven in such a way that the pattern on one side is the reverse of the other. The double-faced design lends itself to a variety of applications. Want to know what makes Damask table linen so special? Read on.. http://www.linendrawer.co.za/blog

As the fabric is often made with fine materials and comes in elaborate designs, it is one of the world’s most luxurious and intriguing fabrics.

Traditionally, damask is made from a single shade of silk or linen. The pattern is recognized by the way light plays off the warp, or vertical, and weft, or horizontal, threads. Some damasks even look different depending on the time of day. Over the last century, the definition of damask has expanded to include fabrics made with two or three colors, as well as other fibres, such as cotton, wool, or rayon. Still other fabrics are merely printed to look like damask, but these, of course, are not reversible.

Fields of blue ls 1 300kb

The first silk damasks, consisting primarily of floral and animal patterns, were produced in China around 300 B.C. This was the beginning of a fascinating history. Damask and fabrics like it, were so desired that rulers of kingdoms went to great lengths to learn the secrets of silk weaving. In the sixth century, the Byzantine emperor commissioned monks to smuggle silkworms out of China in hollowed-out walking sticks.

Damask table linens have their own story. They were first produced in the 1600s, when weavers in the Low Countries (today’s Belgium and the Netherlands) began making fine-quality white linen damask tablecloths and napkins. These were embellished with the previously established patterns, as well as intricate scenes including depictions of famous battles or stories from the Bible. Linen damask became up to date on the tables of well-to-do Europeans and Americans — a trend that continued for centuries. In 1926, etiquette expert Emily Post wrote of damask, “No other table covering, no matter how fine or elaborate, satisfies our inherent sense of faultless suitability.” Today’s taste makers still agree with her.

Despite its historic roots, damask can appear delightfully up-to-date.
